Today we memorialize the 248 Soldiers that were lost in the Arrow Air Flight 1285R crash in Gander, Newfoundland on December 12, 1985. On December 12, 1985, Arrow Air Flight 1285R crashed in Newfoundland, claiming the lives of all 256 people on board—248 U.S. servicemen returning home from a peacekeeping mission and 8 crew members. Among them, all but twelve were members of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), with most belonging to the 3rd Battalion, 502nd Infantry.
