Built in 1861-62, the Swansea Workhouse in Mount Pleasant was where the poor, homeless and destitute lived in deliberately harsh conditions, working in exchange for basic food and shelter. Families were split up, conditions kept grim, and inmates forced to do gruelling tasks - all designed to make sure only the truly desperate would seek help. After becoming Mount Pleasant Hospital in 1929 and serving the NHS from 1948 until closing in 1995, it was converted into housing. #swansea | Swansea Scoo
