The Lowell National Historical Park quarter was launched into circulation on on Wednesday, February 6th! During the launch event the Lowell High School band treated the audience to Robert Sheldon's "Mills On The Merrimack", a piece inspired by the Spindle City. The video highlights scenes from the working world of Lowell’s “mill girls” and a recreation of the dramatic walkout of 1836, where female factory workers walked off the job in protest against lowered wages and difficult working condition

Q: What is a Mill Girl's favorite sport? A: BOXING! . . . Because they know how to bobbin weave. Young farm women were recruited to work in Lowell's earliest textile mills because they already knew how to work on manual looms and were an untapped labor force. While the power looms did most of the work, these Mill Girls were experts in changing out bobbins (spools of thread) on the shuttles and monitoring the quality of cloth woven on the looms. #LowellNPS #LikeLowell #YourParkStory #NationalTell
