Global Warming Potential (GWP) is a metric used to compare how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere relative to carbon dioxide (CO₂). CO₂ is assigned a GWP of 1, and other gases are measured as multiples of that value based on how strongly they contribute to warming over a specific time period (usually 100 years).
