Have you ever heard the “peent” call of the common nighthawk? Common nighthawks are expert insectivores, capturing and consuming flying insects on the wing. They are most active at dawn and dusk, but if insects are plentiful they may hunt at all hours of the day. 📸 of common nighthawk by Barbara Rumer. #commonnighthawk #highdesert #oregondesert #greatbasin #malheurnationalwildliferefuge #friendsofmalheur | Friends of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge

Common Nighthawks can be hard to see as they roost quietly, but on the wing they become much more obvious. Look to the sky to see groups of nighthawks winging their way south! Learn more: https://abcbirds.org/bird/common-nighthawk/ | American Bird Conservancy

Feeding Young Nighthawks! The common nighthawk eats while flying, so we have to hand feed them while in our care. Nighthawks are nocturnal birds in the nightjar family. They fly through the air at night and open their huge mouths to gather large amounts of bugs and gobble them down. #wildliferescue #wildliferehab #keepaustinwild #austintx #austinwildlife #commonnighthawk #nighthawk #lotsofbugs #handfeeding #eatasfastasyoucan #nightjarfamily | Austin Wildlife Rescue

The Common Nighthawk’s erratic, acrobatic flight style gives the bird its folk name “bullbat.” But the nighthawk is a bird, not a mammal. On long, pointed wings, this dusky hunter jerks and weaves through the air, flashing distinctive white wing patches. Unfortunately, in recent decades, the nighthawk has become a less familiar sight in many parts of town-and-country North America. Nighthawks usually spend their days hidden, sometimes in plain view, thanks to their cryptic gray, brown, and black

Despite their name, common nighthawks are uncommonly admitted patients. But surprisingly, seven were brought in needing help in August! Most had been found unable to fly after colliding with windows or being struck by cars. One had even been wounded by a cat. As a Species-at-Risk, each one is critical to sustaining their dwindling population. As with all patients, our team does everything they can to save their lives – including hand-feedings multiple times a day! These special birds are aerial

This Common Nighthawk came in battered and thin from migration, and as you can see, he is none too happy about our efforts to fatten him up! We fed him our specialized baby bird formula for insectivores via syringe six times a day. A member of the nightjar family, nighthawks catch and eat insects in their gaping mouths while flying, much like Chuck-wills-widows. They migrate through Northeast Florida on their way to the tropics for the winter where insects are plentiful. Time was of the essence

This Common Nighthawk came in after he was found alongside the road and unable to fly away. Thankfully, we weren’t able to find any fractures or injuries. Since he was likely struck by a car, we had to cage rest him for a while so his body could rest and heal any internal injuries he may have had. Nighthawks are aerial insectivores, meaning they eat nearly exclusively on the fly. If you watch the video you can see how much their beaks open up. While hunting, they will open up their beaks to catc

“The Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) typically gives a nasal 'peent' in flight, but during the breeding season the males will make this unearthly 'booming' noise (@ 12s in the recording). The sound is entirely mechanical, made by flexing the wings in a steep dive and forcing air through the wing feathers. This display is mostly done to impress females, but sometimes also to intimidate intruders (me in this case).” – Jacob Saucier, Division of Birds #SummerRoadTrip #Playlist | Smithsonian Nat
