The next time you’re standing on the platform at Wapping station, in between trains, listen. The platform is at the entrance to the Thames Tunnel, which took 18 years to dig by hand and opened in 1843 as the first tunnel ever built under a river. The sound you will here is the water that leaks into the tunnel. Beneath the tracks there are two more levels of hidden chambers, where the water is stored before being pumped away.
