The AC-9 was one of two Southern Pacific Railroad's articulated steam locomotive class that ran smokebox forward after 1920. Twelve AC-9 class locomotives were built by Lima in 1939 and were Southern Pacific's largest and heaviest steam engines, partly a consequence of low quality coal these engines were designed to burn.

Finishing up the Sunset SOUTHERN PACIFIC AC-9. I had to put a universal in the drive that I found at a RC hobby shop. After modifications it works great. The usual, Scalecoat black and Testors clear for the finishes. I also mounted the speaker in the boiler along with the Tsunami TSU-2200 Digital Sound Decoder to minimise wires from the tender.

Page 22 of the Pacific Railroad Society's 25th anniversary booklet has a 1948 photo showing three UP Challengers in the SP Colton yard. On the Salt Lake Division east of Sparks, the chief freight steam power in the '40s and '50s on the main line were 2-10-2s and 4-8-2s, so it would have been common for these types to be used on reefer trains.
