6 days ago · The 4460 as most who read this already know is not in the best of conditions in St. Louis and I am aware that this topic has already been discussed many times in the past, but I am convinced that if enough skill, determination, time, and money were put towards 4460 that we will be able to see it return to steam.

Southern Pacific reworked the blueprints to have little streamlining, and not feature the Daylight's color scheme of orange, red and black. These new engines were painted in silver and black, and were also smaller.

Feb 4, 2025 · Quite a few years ago, 4460 was sandblasted and painted. Any of you who have seen how the abrasive grit will absolutely get everywhere in the running gear will understand that total disassembly is job one. Engine has moved around the museum since the painting. so I'm sure journals, etc, have been damaged. 4460 is solid bearings.

3 days ago · And it would be a lot less work for men who are reaching retirement age. "But it is not steam!". I could not get anyone to think in a broader view. It was going to be the Frisco 1522, or nothing. Nothing is what we got. I do not think that there is a core of steam enthusiasts in the St. Louis area that would work on the Southern Pacific 4460.
