Northern Pacific 4-8-4 "Northern" Locomotives in the USA
ALCO delivered the first of 12 of these new locomotives in December of 1926, with the balance arriving early in 1927. Designated Class A, and assigned road numbers 2600 through 2611, they had 73" drivers, 28 x 30 cylinders, a boiler pressure of 210 psi, a tractive effort of 57,500 lbs and weighed 426,000 pounds.

The 2-8-8-4 was first built for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1928. The 4-6-6-4 locomotives were so large that in many places in Montana the Northern Pacific had to widen the centers of its double track on the Rocky Mountain Division.

May 24, 2021 · Northern Pacific’s 12 Z-5 freight locomotives were the first 2-8-8-4 Yellowstone types and, at the time of their construction in 1928 and ’30, the largest engines in the world. Their immense fireboxes, sized for low-grade Rosebud coal, were eventually found to be too big for efficient operation.
