The photographs in this collection capture the history of the Norfolk and Western Railway. Formed by more than 200 mergers between 1838 and 1982, Norfolk and Western was headquartered in Roanoke for most of its existence.

May 13, 2017 · Since the turntable of the roundhouse still exists, it is easy to correlate the current layout with a 1960 aerial photo that still had the tower. The roundhouse was 360-degrees except for the lead track.

First and foremost, it is a view of the large roundhouse which sat roughly where the Lynchburg Union Station would later be built (1890). It also depicts the short covered bridge which carried the double track of the Norfolk & Western Railway across the old canal bed.
