Nov 3, 2024 · The New York Central Railroad (reporting mark NYC) was a railroad operating in the Northeastern United States. In 1968 the NYC merged with its former rival, the Pennsylvania Railroad, to form Penn Central (the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad joined in 1969).

These 40'6" steel boxcars had a capacity of 55 tons and were equipped with 6' doors. They served with NYC reporting marks from 1945-1983. 174545 was assigned to NYC fast freight LCL (Less than Car Load) Pacemaker service which began in 1946.

Trucks could deliver freight anywhere in the city without requiring a railroad siding. The rail tunnels required electric propulsion, limiting their use for freight. A rail freight tunnel from Staten Island to Brooklyn was proposed, but never completed.

The N6 and N6A class transfer cabooses were built in early 1966 by the New York Central in their Despatch Shops in Rochester, NY. Classed 977 by NYC, they were built on the frames of class 703F boxcars.
