The May through August 1940 issues of Railroad Magazine contained installments of the New York Central System locomotive roster, listing all locomotives alphabetically by class. (Early diesel locomotives, called “oil electric” in the roster, were classed DE or DEs.)

Freight operations on the West Side in Manhattan began with the Hudson River Railroad, which was owned by Erastus Corning. The Hudson River Railroad was granted a charter from the city of New York to operate freight and passenger trains south to Chambers Street.

Aug 19, 2024 · The New York Central diesel roster showed diversity in an era known for experimentation. Most of the 174 diesels that Lima produced were switchers, but the builder did turn out 16 1,200 h.p. road-switchers for New York Central, of which No. 5800 was the first.
