Jun 30, 2023 · MINNEAPOLIS — Railroading Heritage of Midwest America has sold one of its passenger cars to CPKC. The baggage-dormitory car, once used on trips pulled by Milwaukee Road 4-8-4 No. 261, will be used as a dormitory on steam trips this summer behind Canadian Pacific 4-6-4 No. 2816.

In July 1944, the Milwaukee Road took an order of (10) 4-8-4 Northerns from the American Locomotive Company. Numbered 260-269, they were designated the S-3 class, and were used for heavy mainline freights and occasionally subbing on crack passenger trains.

The Friends of the 261 was founded in 1991 as "Friends of the 261 Inc." as a non-profit organization group that would maintain and operate Milwaukee Road Class S3 No. 261. They would officially be referred to by many railfans as the "Friends of the 261" and they currently roster two locomotives and have multiple passenger cars.

The Milwaukee Road 261 has reached the junction at La Crescent and unlike yesterday, will turn east and cross the Mississippi River into Wisconsin and a stop at La Crosse. Two views at La Crescent. The train took the big turn to reach the Mississippi River Bridge.

NSR 1615 is the second car in the train, and painted as Milwaukee Road’s “Grand Canyon”
