One of the largest single-unit electric locomotives ever built was the GE "Little Joes" that were built in 1948. General Electric built 20 of these gigantic streamlined locomotives for export to the Soviet Union, which at the time was expanding its electrified trackage.

On the Milwaukee they were known as "Little Joes," after Soviet dictator Josef Stalin, but the South Shore's three units, 801-803, were known simply as "the 800s." Of the 2-D+D-2 axle arrangement, they developed 75,700 pounds of tractive force.

The South Shore was known for many things over the years, but perhaps the most interesting were the "Little Joe" electric locomotives which hauled freight traffic over the line. Little Joe is a nickname that was given to the General Electric’s electric locomotive No. 750 when it was on a four month demonstration tour of the Milwaukee starting in December 1948. It was one of 20 locomotives built for Russia.

Its electric locomotive fleet was reaching the end of its service life, and newer diesel locomotives such as the EMD SD40-2 and the GE Universal Series were more than capable of handling the route. The final electric freight arrived at Deer Lodge, Montana on June 15, 1974.

New for 2010, the M.T.H. Little Joe duplicates the brute strength and dependability of the original, complete with a detailed die-cast metal body and, for the first time in HO, operating pantographs that raise and lower automatically according to the direction of travel.
