It laid its first rails in 1850, and in 1851 it reached from Milwaukee 20 miles west to Waukesha, Wisconsin. The road reached Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin on the Mississippi River in 1857.

May 27, 2019 · With one exception: the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific (CMSP&P), otherwise known as the Milwaukee Road, was one of the great western railroads, at one point linking Chicago with the Pacific Northwest. Ultimately, the Milwaukee had more trackage in Indiana than the Pennsylvania had in Illinois.

The Milwaukee Road itself ceased to exist in 1985 when it was absorbed into the Soo Line Railroad. The Crete Park District now owns about two miles of former right-of-way in Crete Township and has redeveloped it as a recreation trail.
