Home to miles of Lake Superior shoreline, gorgeous nature, and a bakery run by Byzantine Catholic monks, this Michigan village is truly a fairytale escape.

Exactly 50 years ago on Nov. 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank in Lake Superior, killing all 29 crew members on board.

A fireball lit up the sky over eastern Lake Superior late Monday evening, Nov. 3, according to the Michigan Storm Chasers, a group that tracks statewide weather and offers daily forecasts. The meteor, which blazed through the sky at about 10 p.m., was caught on video and shared via social media.

On November 9th, 1975, the ship left the Burlington Northern Railroad Dock in Superior, Wisconsin, but didn’t make its return home.

The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald was considered the largest and fastest Great Lakes ship. It set multiple records for the largest season-hauls. Built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Mich., the ship launched in 1958.

Lake Superior agates often feature a brownish-red exterior that may be pitted and slightly translucent. They’re easiest to spot when they’re wet and the sun has come out, illuminating their distinctive interior bands that can be clear, white, slate-grey, orange or red.

Lake Superior is one of the fastest-warming lakes in the world. Water temperatures on October 20 this year were the second warmest ever recorded.

A National Weather Service meteorologist said he has never seen a lake-effect storm from Lake Superior drop that much snow in Door County in his 20 years.

A woman was saved after a wave swept her into Lake Superior in Grand Marais on Sunday. The Cook County Sheriff's Office said it was called just before 5 p.m. Sunday, when one member of a group of four was swept into the lake as they walked to Grand Marais lighthouse.
