Southerly winds are expected to increase through Sunday morning, peaking late morning to early afternoon with gusts of 50-60mph (80-95 kmh), and perhaps as much as 70mph (112kmh) on the exposed Irish Sea coastline and some other areas of high ground.

The wind warning reads: “Southerly to southwesterly winds are expected to increase through Sunday morning, peaking late morning to early afternoon with gusts of 50-60mph, and perhaps as much as 70mph in exposed spots along Irish Sea coastlines.”

In Northern Ireland, meanwhile, all six counties will be affected by a Status Yellow wind warning that had been issued by the Met Office on Thursday. It will come into effect at 3am on Sunday morning and remain in place until 3pm on Sunday afternoon, with “some disruption” expected as a result.

The yellow alert for wind comes into force at 3am on Sunday, February 23, and will remain in force until 3pm on the same day. The alert covers the entire region. The forecaster said: " Strong winds may lead to some disruption on Sunday."
