A Washington state resident has preliminarily tested positive for bird flu, marking the first human case in the U.S. in nine months.

A Washington resident has been hospitalized with a different strain of bird flu than those seen in past cases, state health officials announced Friday.

It follows a "sharp increase" of cases of kept and wild birds with Wales now facing a "very high level" of avian flu risk.
