The Detroit Tigers showed interest in right-handed reliever Kyle Finnegan during free agency, but he signed with the Washington Nationals instead.

It’s hard to tell the story of the Washington Nationals over the past five years without Kyle Finnegan. On Thursday, however, the Nationals determined that the 33-year-old closer won’t be a part of their next chapter. They sent him to the Detroit Tigers for right-handed pitching prospects Josh Randall and R.J. Sales.

After landing Paul Sewald in a surprise deal with the Cleveland Guardians, the Detroit Tigers stayed aggressive on Thursday. Detroit is clearly doubling down on improving its bullpen ahead of the 2025 trade deadline.
