After Morrison left the X-Men franchise in 2004, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly creator Joss Whedon took over the flagship mutant title with artist John Cassaday in Astonishing X-Men.

Cyclops explained, in Young X-Men #10, that he and Jean Grey discovered Alisa Tager during a riot in Mutant Town. This occurred during the 2001 New X-Men series.

But X-Men #8 doesn’t get into any of that. Instead, it’s a splashy issue full of Jim Lee cheesecake and beefcake, in which the Gambit and Bishop battle climaxes with a pie in Rogue’s face.
