Both teams tightened up defensively in the second period, so scoring chances were more limited. The Red Wings did break the tie, however. Marco Kasper got open in front of the Lightning net and redirected a puck off the post and in at 9:55.
The Tampa Bay Lightning scored three goals in a span of 3:42 less than four minutes into the second period to break the game open and went on to defeat the Red Wings 5-1 at Amalie Arena. Detroit (21-20-4) has lost two of its past three following a seven-game winning streak. The Lightning (25-16-3) are 5-1-1 in their past seven.
Kucherov danced his way to the right faceoff dot, pulling a Detroit defender toward him before cutting back to the right center hashmark. Kucherov shelved his shot into the top right corner of the Detroit net for his 21 st goal of the season.
The Red Wings’ first team features forwards Pavel Datsyuk, Steve Yzerman and Henrik Zetterberg, defensemen Niklas Kronwall and Nicklas Lidstrom and goaltender Chris Osgood. The second team includes forwards Sergei Fedorov, Dylan Larkin and Brendan Shanahan, defensemen Chris Chelios and Brian Rafalski and goaltender Dominik Hasek.
The Detroit Red Wings need another long winning streak if they are to make headway in the playoff race. They had a promising outing on Thursday with a 4-2 win over the Montreal Canadiens and will try to maintain the positive vibes going when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.
Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov tallied a goal and two assists during their overtime victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday evening. Kucherov tallied the primary assist on Mitchell Chaffee's power-play strike in the opening frame.
