The Justice Department on Thursday announced a lawsuit against New York City’s so-called sanctuary city policies, days after the Trump administration blamed those policies for the shooting of an off-duty US Customs and Border Protection officer in Manhattan.

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he was briefed on the Monday night mass shooting in New York City, saying his “heart was with” the four people killed. “I trust our Law Enforcement Agencies to get to the bottom of why this crazed lunatic committed such a senseless act of violence,” he wrote in a Truth Social post.

Donald Trump has taken New York City to court after its officials "obstructed" his efforts to deport illegal migrants. Federal prosecutors have sued both the city and its mayor, Eric Adams, for their "sanctuary policies" which restrict how far authorities can collaborate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice).
