House Bill 1921 would gradually transition Washington state to a road usage charge system over the next 10 years.

The proposed bill would implement a system charging drivers based on how much they drive in order to fund road maintenance and preservation.

The Washington Legislature has reintroduced a proposal to establish a new road usage fee aimed at generating transportation revenue based on motor vehicle use.

After more than a decade of tabletop exercises, pilot programs and studies, the legislature is finally going to take up the Road Usage Charge (RUC). The plan to have us pay-by-mile will have its first hearing on Thursday.

Washington State may soon make a major move in funding transportation infrastructure. On Tuesday, Washington State Transportation Committee Chair Jake Fey introduced House Bill 1921, which would phase in a road usage charge for drivers.
