The Trump administration is steaming forward on its plan to dismantle the Education Department. Many state and local education leaders say they are bracing for disruption and new bureaucratic hurdles.
Since the start of her tenure in President Donald Trump's second term, McMahon has campaigned on being the last secretary of education.
McMahon has also repeatedly affirmed that only Congress can fully shut down the department, but she’s noted that closing the department is different from dismantling bureaucracy and co-managing operations with other cabinet level departments.
The department's proposal may impact how much money student loan borrowers can receive depending on the graduate degree they choose.
