Four members of a family from Northern California who were celebrating a birthday were among eight people killed when a boat capsized on Lake Tahoe in California over the weekend during a sudden and fierce thunderstorm.

Eight people who died after a boat capsized amid stormy weather on Lake Tahoe last weekend have been identified, including some who were Bay Area residents, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office.

Five of the eight people who died after their boat flipped Saturday in Lake Tahoe were from Northern California, and three were from upstate New York, according to the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
