The S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald was considered the largest and fastest Great Lakes ship. It set multiple records for the largest season-hauls. Built by the Great Lakes Engineering Works in River Rouge, Mich., the ship launched in 1958.
On November 9th, 1975, the ship left the Burlington Northern Railroad Dock in Superior, Wisconsin, but didn’t make its return home.
Historian Fred Stonehouse discusses the history of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and Darren Muljo shares his family's connection to the ship and their work to preserve its legacy. Later in the show, the next poet laureate of the Upper Peninsula is revealed.
A fireball lit up the sky over eastern Lake Superior late Monday evening, Nov. 3, according to the Michigan Storm Chasers, a group that tracks statewide weather and offers daily forecasts. The meteor, which blazed through the sky at about 10 p.m., was caught on video and shared via social media.

Lake Superior agates often feature a brownish-red exterior that may be pitted and slightly translucent. They’re easiest to spot when they’re wet and the sun has come out, illuminating their distinctive interior bands that can be clear, white, slate-grey, orange or red.
