Houstonians found themselves becoming all-too familiar with a term many had never heard before: derecho. Coined by a physics professor at the University of Iowa in 1888, a derecho is broadly defined as a widespread and severe complex of thunderstorms that produces a swath of damaging winds at least 250 miles long.
