Southwest Airlines is selling 36 Boeing 737-800s and United Airlines is buying 18 Embraer E175s as both carriers enter new sale and leaseback agreements.

Executing on a fleet strategy announced during its recent investor day, Southwest Airlines has entered into a sale-leaseback transaction for 36 Boeing 737-800s.

Southwest Airlines Co. (NYSE: LUV) and BBAM today announced the sale and leaseback of 36 Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The aircraft will be owned and leased to Southwest Airlines by Incline Aviation III, the third in BBAM's flagship aviation investment fund series.

Southwest Airlines said on Tuesday it had entered into a deal to sell and lease back 36 of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft from Babcock & Brown Aircraft Management, helping the carrier raise cash and ease the pressure on its balance sheet.

Southwest in 2024 unveiled a plan to improve its finances. The Dallas-based airline says this is an "important step" in that process.
